Utopia Documents is a free PDF reader that connects the static content of scientific articles to the dynamic world of online content and allows data to be extracted from figures and tables within the scientific literature. Interesting concepts and words can be further investigated using a variety of tools – including the Open PHACTS Explorer, see this short video demonstration.

Utopia Documents has been used at Roche to link internal and external data sources, for interactive figure browsing and to link the disparate worlds of unstructured literature and structured database. See this use case presented by Markus Bundschus at the Pharma Documentation Ring’s special meeting on text mining in November 2013.

Utopia Documents was developed at the University of Manchester, and can be downloaded at utopiadocs.com.
